Project: Indoor Soccer Facility and Outdoor Lacrosse Bowl
_
Owner: Municipality of Clarington
Prime Consultant: Barry Bryan Associates (1991) Limited
Description: The Clarington Indoor Soccer facility is the first for Clarington. The 28,000 sf facility boasts a 180 x 100 ft indoor soccer field with artificial turf, spectator seating and viewing areas, change rooms, a classroom, food bar, and administration offices. The Facility also includes an outdoor lacrosse field complete with dasherboards and concrete playing surface, and outdoor seating. The structure is a unique system that employs the use of concrete tiltup walls with longspan roof trusses. The benefit of this wall system allows for an interior playing area that has no exposed steel beams, typically found in prefabricated steel frame systems. There are no columns for any one to run into, plus all the electrical outlets are cast into the wall system. The Architecture of the facility is inspired by the soccer ball, and takes advantage of the plastic and sculptural nature of the tilt up wall panels. The motif of the soccer ball is transcribed into the wall surface, and is playfully "bounced" along the building elevations.
